Are you Grasping the Opportunities for Your e-Platform?

Feb 07, 2024

Running a successful online platform requires not only attracting visitors but also understanding why they might leave.

In this piece, I`d like to talk about exploring the six main reasons why people leave e-platforms and provide you with valuable tips on how to address them. If you are non-digital native founder or intrapreneur, this is exactly where I can help you reskill/upskill on a topic-based challenge.

Here is what you can explore on this post:

  1. Why do people leave websites and e-platforms?
  2. What are ways to avoid people leaving your online platform?
  3. What are tips if you are a non-digital native founder or intrapreneur?

Let`s start with the why.

1. Why do people leave websites and e-platforms?

Here are 6 reasons why your customers might be leaving your e-platform based on the data:

1. Slow Loading Times:  One of the biggest turn-offs for visitors is a website that takes forever to load. According to my experience as a digital strategist, ensuring that your website is optimized for speed by minimizing large files and optimizing images makes a positive impact on increasing performance.

Data: Google data shows that 53% of mobile site views end if a page takes more than three seconds to load.

2. Bad Design and Boring Content: A visually unappealing website with dull content can quickly drive visitors away. Investing in a modern and user-friendly design and creating engaging and informative content that keeps your audience in mind will help them stay longer.

Data: In a study, Adobe found that 38% of people leave websites with bad layouts.  Another survey by HubSpot shows that 43% of users leave websites when the content is not appealing.

3. Poor Mobile Experience: With the increasing use of mobile devices, it's crucial to have a website that is mobile-friendly. Making sure your website is responsive is one of the starting points that will help.

This is also for the platform you are visiting now, one of the areas, that still needs room for improvement. My platform can be better on that, I admit, and am on it. (Smiling emoji here).

Data: According to Google, 52% of users are less likely to engage with a company with poor mobile experience on their online platform.

4. Ads or Pop-ups: Intrusive ads and pop-ups can be annoying and disrupt the user experience. I`d recommend using them strategically.

Data: According to this study, 82% of people leave when there are annoying pop-ups.

5. Lack of Trust: Building trust with your visitors is essential for retaining them. Displaying trust signals such as customer testimonials, security badges, and clear privacy policies will help increase confidence in your brand.

Data: Blue Fountain Media's survey showed that 81% of people would leave a website that is not trustworthy for them.

6. Broken Links and Pages with Error Messages: Broken links or errors, make it hard for your customers or users to do what they came to your e-platform to do.  Most people would not continue to discover many pages of a website with this type of problem.

 2. What are ways to avoid people leaving your online platform?

Here are my six tips to ensure people stay on your platform:

  1. Make sure that your website loads fast. Check your site speed. Here is how to check your site speed.
  2. Ensure that the mobile performance is great by giving a priority.
  3. Don`t overuse pop- ups. When you have them ensure that the pop-ups easy to close.
  4. Consider ways to create or increase trust by adding recommendations or logos from relevant customers. It might be obvious and still a kind reminder: ask first and get your client`s permission first. Because particularly corporate branding teams have guidelines on the usage of logos and whether you can use them or not.
  5. Check and fix broken links regularly. (PS: A broken link means a page showing an error message or 404 message.)
  6. Focus on a great user experience and content that is relevant for your audience and potential customers.

 3. What are tips if you are a non-digital native founder or intrapreneur?

Are you new here and need help to navigate the digital world for your e-business? Are you looking for ways to keep your customers online and don`t know where to start? If so, then you are welcome on this e-platform, and I`d love to help.

Here is a piece, that will help you to test your website speed, and mobile performance, check pages that give error messages, and all of the above topics I`ve mentioned.
